International Women’s Day is a global moment to celebrate the achievements of women and to reflect on the work that still remains in the pursuit of gender equality. It is also a time to consider the role each of us plays in shaping a more inclusive and equitable society. This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights a simple but powerful truth. When individuals, organizations, and communities give support, opportunity, respect, and encouragement to women and girls, everyone benefits. Families become stronger, workplaces become more innovative, and communities become more resilient. Too often, conversations about gender equality focus only on what women lack. The theme “Give to Gain” shifts the conversation toward responsibility and contribution. It reminds us that advancing equality requires action from everyone, not just policies or public campaigns.

Here are five meaningful ways we can contribute in ways that help women thrive and strengthen society as a whole.
1. Promote respect and challenge harmful stereotypes
Respect is one of the most important things we can give in everyday interactions. Unfortunately, harmful stereotypes about women continue to appear in jokes, casual comments, and assumptions about what women can or cannot do. Challenging these ideas does not require confrontation. A calm response such as “I do not think that is fair” or “That assumption may not be accurate” can encourage reflection and shift the tone of a conversation. When we give respect and challenge stereotypes, women gain dignity and recognition.
2. Create space for women’s voices to be heard
In many classrooms, workplaces, and community discussions, women’s voices are sometimes interrupted, overlooked, or dismissed. Creating space for women to express their perspectives is an important step toward equality. Listen attentively when women speak. Encourage their participation in discussions. If an idea is overlooked, acknowledge it and bring attention back to it. When we give women space to share their ideas, organizations gain more balanced decision making and more creative solutions. Inclusive conversations often lead to stronger outcomes for everyone.
3. Promote more opportunities for women to lead and thrive
Opportunities shape careers and influence future possibilities. Yet many women still face barriers when it comes to leadership roles and professional advancement. Encouraging women to lead projects, recommending qualified women for positions, and supporting women in pursuing their ambitions are practical ways to contribute to change. Organizations can also review their systems to ensure that opportunities are distributed fairly.

4. Support women’s ambition and economic independence
Ambition should be encouraged, not questioned. However, women are sometimes discouraged from pursuing leadership roles, entrepreneurship, or career advancement due to societal expectations or lack of support. Supporting women’s ambitions can take many forms. Encourage their goals. Celebrate their achievements. Offer mentorship, collaboration, or guidance when possible. When women receive encouragement and support, they gain confidence to pursue their aspirations. Communities in turn gain innovators, leaders, and problem solvers who contribute meaningfully to progress.
5. Guide the next generation toward equality
One of the most lasting ways to create change is by shaping the values of the next generation. Young people learn from what they see and hear around them. Teach boys that strength includes respect, empathy, and fairness. Teach girls that their ideas matter and that their ambitions are valid. Encourage young people to question harmful stereotypes and treat others with dignity. When we give guidance and positive values to young people, society gains a future generation that is more aware, compassionate, and committed to equality.
This year’s theme reminds us that gender equality grows through everyday choices and intentional actions. When individuals give respect, fairness, and encouragement, women gain confidence and opportunity. When organizations give equitable policies and leadership opportunities, they gain stronger teams and better outcomes. Organizations, institutions, and communities also have an important role to play. By creating inclusive spaces, supporting women’s leadership, and investing in opportunities for girls and young women, they help build a society where everyone can thrive. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, the question is not only how far we have come, but also what we are willing to contribute moving forward. When we choose to give respect, opportunity, and encouragement to women and girls, we help build a future where everyone truly gains.
